I applaud the sentiments and opinions Senator Obama sets forth. I would just add this: there have been times in our history when the Supreme Court has stepped up to the plate and overridden states' rights when individual rights were compromised - Brown v. Board of Education and more recently Lawrence v. Kansas are examples - the court struck down state policies that interefered with basic human rights. The Court as presently constituted is not likely to continue, and has not in fact continued to advance the cause of individual liberty. I sincerely hope that vacancies will occur on the court during a democratic (Obama or Clinton) administration so that we can hold out some hope that just as the Federal judiciary told the states, you may not pass laws that prohibit people of different races from marrying a newly constituted court will use the same excellent logic to find that states may not stand in the way of LGBT couples who wish to marry.
